If your car won’t start, a jump starter can save the day. Consumer Reports tests, rates, and reviews jump starters, also called portable power packs. These battery-operated devices are used to jump-start a car (or boat or RV) by supplying enough current to the dead battery to get the engine to turn over.
Most jump starters have a built-in battery charger so you can recharge them from a household outlet. Some have an air compressor to fill tires. A few have a USB port to power or recharge devices such as a phone.
When shopping for a jump starter, look for one that can start your car’s engine several times in a row on a single charge. Also, check the voltage rating to be sure it’s compatible with your car. Most jump starters have a 12-volt output. Some have a higher voltage for jump-starting diesels.
To use a jump starter, first make sure that it’s fully charged. Then, follow the instructions in your car’s owner manual for jump-starting. If you don’t have the manual, look for the jump-starting instructions in the car.
Once you’ve connected the jump starter to the car, start the engine of the jump starter and let it run for a few minutes before trying to start your car. This will give the jump starter a chance to charge the car’s battery.
If your car doesn’t start after a few tries, you may need to have the battery replaced.
